Sew What?
The Sew What? program is a Gambit Non-Profit initiative geared towards teaching youth in low-income communities how to sew. The goal of this program is to reduce the cost of fashion for youth in low-income communities while also giving them the ability of complete clothing design and customization.
- Diverse After-School Activity
This program leads to more diverse after school activities that are possible for students in the Chicago area to participate in and will definitely be popular as it engages with a daily activity everyone deals with: Wearing Clothes. Kids love to put their energy into sports in low-income areas, wait for the data after they realize they can learn to make skinny jeans out of any pair of pants.
- Trade Skill
This program teaches youth a trade during their free time which can lead to their own professional practice. Students can use their sewing skill to do ad-hoc projects in their community and with a large amount of experience can enter the entertainment industry as a professional tailor! They could even take their portfolio of work and use it to apply to design school that will make them masters of the tailoring trade.
- Gambit Couture Platform
Being apart of the Sew What? program also certifies the participant to participate in Gambit Couture's business platform. Gambit Couture focuses on developing custom clothing pieces for sale from reuse material in addition to taking on clients to create their own custom pieces. Students can earn extra cash by becoming a part-time employee of the Gambit Couture Platform.
- Fashion Beyond the Commercial Industry
Ultimately, most people who do not participate in tailoring today have bound their fashion style to what is available Commercially. Being a member of the Sew What? program allows for the exploration of fashion beyond this barrier, truly turning fashion into an art for developing ones exact, desired look.
